GENEALOGISTS LOOSE DOWNSTAIRS
GENEALOGY ROOM
Brenda Kellow
March 24, 2013
Genealogists are devastated they are losing the meeting room downstairs in the genealogy library. Funds to build it were donated when the genealogy library was being built. The deceased’s family donated the money for its construction as a memorial for genealogists to be used as needed.
Last week, the library notified genealogists that it would no longer be free, and furthermore, it would only be available to rent after 5:30 p.m. The room will be used by library administration during working hours. Genealogists can rent it after 5:30 p.m. for $25 an hour.
All library rooms will be rented by the hour instead of at no charge. Gratefully, Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc. will not be affected by the new policy because of the many thousands of dollars they donate to the Genealogy Library each year for acquisitions.
PLANO’S LEGACY USER GROUP AFFECTED BY LIBRARY RENTAL FEE: The Legacy User Group (LUG) has been held at the library at no charge to participants for several years. With the new library charge policy
in effect, that well-attended genealogy computer group will no longer be able to meet after the March meeting as it stands now.
Some changes have been made. At a special called meeting, Genealogy Friends incorporated LUG into their organization and LUG will now operate under its umbrella. A few days afterwards, Joanne met with
the library and a further arrangement was made to include LUG meetings into the library newsletter. For now, the room is reserved for LUG for May, June and July. It is not known at this time where, or if, LUG will meet at the library in April. That answer should be forthcoming.
LUG, headed by mentor Joanne Corney, normally meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month downstairs in the genealogy room. When there are five Saturdays in the month, Joanne hosts another class for
those having computer problems. The first half of the computer help session is from 1:30-3:30. There new features are demonstrated and help offered on many aspects. For those needing individual hands-on interface with Joanne, that session is from 3:30-5:30. The attendance is hefty and held totally without
charge. The Legacy Family Tree software is free and the one preferred by most genealogists. A few have the paid version which has more bells and whistles.
CHAPMAN FAMILY ASSOCIATION 13TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: The Chapman descendants and related lines will meet in Seattle on June 7-8 at the Holiday Inn Seattle/SeaTac International Airport 17338
International Boulevard. The interesting program consists of a variety of presentations, silent auction, photo contest, display, and sessions at the library. Some sessions include sharing stories about our Chapman’s’ on the Go! and other historical and genealogical topics. Visit the website for more information, www.chapmanfamilies.org/. Or, contact Al Chapman, Post Office Box 1065, Anderson, MO 64831-1065,telephone 417-845-7282, or email him at [email protected].
ALTERNATE SEARCH ENGINES: Seldom do I use another search engine besides Google, but there are others. I tried Dogpile, www.dogpile.com, for a while. When Bing, www.bing.com, began I tried it. Another is Yippy, http://search.yippi.com. Two search engines devoted to genealogy are
LiveRoots, www.liveroots.com and Mocavo, www.mocavo.com.
FGS CONFERENCE HELD IN FORT WAYNE: The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) holds its annual genealogy conference on August 21-24 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. FGS is a conference for the nation’s
genealogists. The theme this year is Journey through Generations. Those attending will certainly want to visit the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center. You can register online at www.fgs.org or email for information to [email protected]. The Genealogy Library has information and catalogs
downstairs at W. O. Haggard Library.
