Those with a Plano library card can access the Ancestry Library Edition database from any library computer in the city. With the new addition, INFOLinks section under the heading Genealogy, researchers can search all the 50 states. The link is under the United States section. From there, select the state of your choice to see specific databanks such as vital records, ethnic registers or specific times relating to that particular state. Some states have more information than others do and may direct you to free or
subscription sites.
Under TEXAS, there is a link to the Plano Star Courier death index for the years 1918-1922 compliments of the Plano Library.
The Ancestry.com home edition is a subscription site, so accessing it through the library at no charge is certainly the better way to research. The librarians will be happy to help you learn this program.
FINDING THOSE ELUSIVE FEMALES: Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc. will present a free program on March 16, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Program Room at the W. O. For additional information, please check the website at www.genealogyfriends.org. For questions, please call (972) 836-9436 or e-mail g[email protected].

TOUR COLLIN COUNTY’S HISTORIC CHURCHES: The historical society is sponsoring another inexpensive bus tour on March 16 where registrants will tour the county’s historic churches such as First Methodist Church of McKinney, the First Baptist Churches of Farmersville and Murphy, the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Wylie and the Corinth Presbyterian Church which has the oldest continuous congregation, having begun on August 2, 1846. The tour begins at the McKinney Methodist Church at Church
and Lamar, 8:45-4:30 pm. Lunch is at the restored Murphy School followed by the Texas Historical Marker dedication afterwards. Pre-registration is highly recommended. I have already reserved my seat from [email protected]. You may also call 214-914-6297 to reserve your seat. FHL’S SATURDAY
HOURS CUT: Beginning April 13, the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City will cut the operating hours on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. that reflect Monday’s hours of operation. Late
Saturday traffic has slowed over the years, maybe because of the tremendous amount of genealogy available online. The FHL is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. To see their holiday hours, go to https://familysearch.org/locations/library_hours.
VIRGINIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY SPOTLIGHTS AFRICAN AMERICANS: Unknown No Longer is a database of the names of all the enslaved Virginians that appear in the Society’s unpublished documents. Within these documents are numerous accounts that collectively help tell the stories of African Americans who have lived in the state over the centuries. The website for Unknown No Longer, sponsored in part by a generous grant from Dominion, notes that “those whose names appear in the database need not have lived their lives solely in Virginia, for our collections contain plantation records, for example, kept
by Virginians who moved to other states, taking their slaves with them. In addition, if we know that an individual named in a post-Civil War document had been enslaved before 1865, his or her name will appear in the database. Search this directory at http://unknownnolonger.vahistorical.org/.
SEARCH CRAVEN COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA BIBLES ONLINE: In 2002-2003, the public library and the Craven County Genealogical Society asked those wishing their bibles photocopied to be included
in the project to bring in their bibles. Anyone wishing to participate in this project can access more information online at http://cdm16241.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/p16241coll1.
