Some of you know it as the Civil War and others The War Between the States. Regardless, it happened a long time ago, 1861-1865 to be exact. Many of these records exist in archives across the country, but recently a librarian in the Richland County Public Library in Columbia, South Carolina discovered a previously unknown volume. The library refers to it as a “one-of-a-kind record: a large ledger detailing muster rolls for hundreds of companies that served as part of South Carolina Civil War regiments.”
The manager of the local history room, Debbie Bloom, found the battered ledger earlier this year in a box in the storage area. Bloom described the index, called the Confederate Rolls of South Carolina, as “about two inches thick consisting of hundreds of company rolls for South Carolina infantry, cavalry and artillery units that served during the war.”
After it was contacted, the University of South Carolina scanned the ledger and now it is online for all of us to research. You can view it at http://digital.tcl.sc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/confedrolls/id/705. The picture of the ledger appears ancient. They found a newspaper article pasted inside it suggesting it was completed in 1898 by Columbia area author and printer August Kohn after working on it for 16 years.
